Let's celebrate Summer!

Summer is upon us. The heat and humidity, the long sunny days, the kids who are out of school and ready to play, all bring a sense that this is time to relax and enjoy. For so many of us there are specific memories and emotions that summertime brings, of barbeques, picnics, and laying by a pool or on the beach. When we are young, it feels like all of our time is our own, and opportunities for fun and excitement are always at hand. For me, I remember playing freeze tag and hide and go seek well past sunset with all the kids from my neighborhood, surrounded by the sounds of cicadas and the sight of the lightning bugs when the sun finally set. I remember riding our bikes until we were sweaty and sore. I remember getting to stay up as late as I wanted and then sleep in- at least until my sisters forced me to wake up. These are happy memories and I like to try and recapture as much of that sense of freedom and joy as I can.

If you are anything like me, you are still living your everyday routine all summer long. Family still needs to be taken care of, there are errands to run, kids to feed and care for, and a job that you still go to nearly every day. So the question is: how do we rediscover that unique sense of endless fun and relaxation while still going about the business of life? Here are a few suggestions. Get outside and soak up the sun. Maybe you are lucky and already have a big backyard, a swimming pool, or a beautiful patio. If so, yay! How often do you use it? Make time each day to go outside and feel the heat. Make a glass of iced tea or an icy cocktail and immerse yourself in the feel of summer. If your space is small you can still enjoy it. Do you have the space for a tanning pool? What about a rocking chair? It does not have to be expensive to feel like luxury! Maybe you live in the city, or you do not have any outdoor space to call your own. That is OK! Find a nearby park or walking trail and get outside! Do not spend that outdoor time on your phone. Appreciate the sounds, smells, and sights that are unique to summer and celebrate that you are taking time to enjoy it!
